Meteorite falls in the Russian Urals mid-morning on Friday- February 15, 2013. Reports said at least 400 people sustained injuries and wounds caused by broken glass from explosions after meteor fragments fell in a thinly populated area of the Chelyabinsk region.
The Emergency Ministry said in a statement that three persons were brought to the hospital in serious condition. Spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov also said the roof of a zinc factory had collapsed, although it wasn’t clear whether or not the facility was directly hit by meteorites.
There were conflicting reports as to the exact number of meteors that fell in the Ural Mountains. Irina Rossius, one of the interior ministry’s spokesperson told The Associated Press there was a meteor shower, but another spokeswoman named Elena Smirnikh said in another news report that there was only one.
