Authorities said, according to the Clarion Ledger, that the multi-state crackdown involved more than 700 law enforcement officers who made the arrests in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Puerto Rico and Rhode Island. At least 100 people were arrested in a drug bust operation Wednesday.

“We allege that the defendants arrested today were responsible for a very large percentage of the heroin and cocaine available for street sale in New London County,” U.S. Attorney David Fein said.

Officials accuse Luis Ariel Capellan Maldonado of facilitating shipment of “multi-kilogram quantities” of heroin and sometimes cocaine from the Dominican Republic, his native country. He allegedly used couriers to distribute the drugs in the United States.
