See Giorgos Katidis as he was banned for life Nazi salute- Photo.
Katidis, who signed a four-year contract with AEK in August last year, was told to appear before the club’s management on Wednesday to explain his actions, the report said.
Yahoo! News New Zealand reports that officials of the Greek football federation didn’t like what he’s done and unanimously decided the sanction during a general meeting over the weekend.
“The action by the player to salute spectators with a Nazi salute defies common sense, profoundly shows disrespect to all the victims of Nazi atrocities and injures the peaceful and deeply human character of football. The Greek football federation condemns unequivocally and categorically such actions,” the organization said in an official statement.
AEK’s German coach Ewald Lienen reportedly defended Katidis, saying the 20-year-old player was “ignorant to the salute’s significance.”
“He is a young kid who does not have any political ideas. He most likely saw such a salute on the Internet or somewhere else and did it, without knowing what it means,” Lienen said according to Yahoo! News NZ.
