It’s been just over one week since Twitch Broadcasting launched on Xbox One. In order to help their new Xbox One streamers ease into the Twitch community -- which is already 45 million members strong -- here are some tips for first-time broadcasters:
Be a curator of conversations: Read your chat and be sure to interact with your viewers. Talk about everything and don't limit your conversation to the game you are playing or games in general. Talk about life, pop culture, food, music and everything in between.
Enable your Kinect camera and mic: People want to see and hear you. Make sure you enable the Kinect for picture and sound (or plug in a headset). There's something very special about having a broadcaster looking right at the camera and talking directly to viewers, LIVE. Plus this will increase your viewership.
Broadcast without boundaries: Twitch is long form entertainment, so don’t feel restrained by the clock. Our broadcasters stream for hours, so find a sweet spot and before you know it you'll be doing a marathon session in celebration of a new game release.
Find a genre: When laying the foundation for your channel, don't feel the need to be the best at every game. However, if you are good at one genre, focus on that until you get the swing for engaging between chat and gaming at the same time. It can be a challenge to master both, but hang in there and it will become second nature. And if you’re not good at any games, embrace the entertainment value of failing and look to your viewers to help you out.
Have a regular broadcast schedule: This way your viewers can become aware of when a broadcast will happen. You want to post this schedule everywhere you can -- Fathersongaming is a great example so check them out. The more informed the community is with your shows, the more people will show up. And, the more folks watching your broadcast, the greater your chances of being featured on Twitch's homepage or featured channel page.
Connect your Twitter account: The best way to attract viewers is to make sure people know you’re broadcasting in the first place. By connecting your Twitter account, Twitch will send out a Tweet to your followers every time you start broadcasting. To set this up, go to your settings pageon Twitch and check “connect to Twitter.”
Community matters: Broadcasting is built around community, whether it's your own or someone else’s, so join and interact with other channels where you share common interests. This can help you attract a crossover viewership.
Authentic voice is essential: Go out there, have fun and be real. The more authentic your approach is, the more your viewers will connect with you.
