Watch Kiefer Ravena Stars in 28th SEA Games “Greatest” Songs.
Brothers Kiefer and Thirdy Ravena are part of the official music video of the 28th Southeast Asian Games.
This dominance got us wondering about the composition of all these SEA Games teams through the years. So with the help of local basketball historians Nardy Madrasto and Anthony Servinio, we sought to determine the line-ups of all Philippine men’s basketball teams that have competed in the SEA Games since basketball was introduced in 1977. After some research, here are the names we came up with. Browsing through these line-ups, you can see some of the biggest names that have graced Philippine basketball over the last 38 years.
Even though the Philippine Basketball Association was founded just two years before basketball was introduced at the SEA Games, it wasn’t until 1989 that a SEA Games gold medalist would be named the PBA’s Most Valuable Player. That player was Benjie Paras, who won the gold in 1987 on a star-studded SEA Games team that also featured one other future MVP and a future Rookie of the Year.
All told, there have been seven SEA Games gold medalists who have been named PBA MVP, including four who have won it at least twice – Paras, Alvin Patrimonio, Allan Caidic, Vergel Meneses, Johnny Abarrientos, Danny Ildefonso, and James Yap – and 13 who have won Rookie of the Year – Jimmy Manansala, Rafael “Cho” Sison, Willie Pearson, Allan Caidic, Jojo Lastimosa, Benjie Paras, Bong Ravena, Jun Limpot, Marlou Aquino, Danny Ildefonso, Rich Alvarez, Gabe Norwood, and Greg Slaughter. Another ROY winner, Gerry Esplana, won a silver medal.
