Once again, the Philippines is the heavy favorite to bag the gold medal in men’s basketball at the Southeast Asian Games. And once again, a familiar face will lead the Filipino dribblers’ march to what would be a 17th gold in the event.
This will be the third straight SEA Games for Kiefer Ravena, and if the Gilas Cadets romp away with the gold in Singapore, as they are widely expected to, it would put the 21-year-old Ateneo guard in very rare company.
Since the birth of the SEA Games in 1977, only three Filipino basketball players have managed to win three SEA Games gold medals. That honor belongs to forward Elmer Reyes, who took home the gold in 1981, 1983, and 1985, forward Ruben De la Rosa, who won in 1995, 1999 and 2001, and big man Romel Adducul, who bagged golds in 1997, 1999 and 2001.
