The five educators educators along with two aid workers were on their way home from work when the ambush took place in northwest Pakistan.

According to the Associated Press, the teachers were gunned down in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the same area where militants shot and seriously wounded Malala Yousufzai, the 15-year-old activist who fights for women’s right to education, in October last year.

Javed Akhtar, director of Support With Working Solutions, a non-governmental organization active in vaccination campaigns against polio, suspect that the victims were targeted for their anti-polio work.

AP reports that health workers have long been accused by militants as spies working for the US government, with an allegation that the anti-polio vaccine is intended to make Muslim children sterile.
