10 overseas Filipinos jailed in Qatar granted clemency

admin 02:12 Add Comment

The Philippine Embassy in Doha reported that clemency was extended to 10 incarcerated overseas Filipinos—nine males and one female.

The clemency was issued by the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in light of the occasion of the Qatar National Day celebrated every 18th of December. The Emir usually issues pardons twice a year, the other during the holy month of Ramadan.

Those granted clemency are often those who have already served a substantial portion of their sentences.

The Embassy is now in the process of facilitating their repatriation in coordination with the Search and Follow-Up Department under the Ministry of Interior.

Qatar has 100,000 jobs awaiting Overseas Filipino Workers. According to ConstructionWeekOnline
The Philippines’ labour department announced the vacancies following a meeting with Qatari officials last week.

It comes at the same time as a separate announcement yesterday that the Philippine government would lift its ban on sending its workers to Lebanon and Jordan.

Qatar approved 296,787 work visas for overseas Filipino workers between October 2008 and March 2009, but so far only 190,000 positions have been filled, leaving 100,000 work visas available, said Marianito Roque, Philippine Labour Secretary.

Visa Ban in Qatar now reduced to 6 Months?

Visa Ban in Qatar now reduced to 6 Months?

admin 09:19 Add Comment
For those asking for Qatar Visa Ban without NOC is it true that the 'ban' is now reduced to 6 months. According to the article from onlineqatar.com,

Changing jobs in Qatar
"Earlier, the employers used to recruit workers on a fixed period of contract, generally for two years, and thereafter, the contract could be renewed as per mutual consent. But, the employers felt that this didn't work to their advantage, as the employee would later move on when a competitor offers new contract.

Therefore, today contracts are open-ended, and have few clauses to protect employer, such as the six-month period prior to granting new work visa for a particular worker. This implies that the worker should leave the country for six months before re-applying for a visa."

But some comments says without the release letter(NOC) from the employer, the employee will be banned for two years from entering Qatar.

According to Bradd Veek"The ban is still 2 years. There is no such thing as 6 months ban in Qatar. Unless there are amendments of labor law in the coming future, I need to wait first for the execution and implementation of thereof."

Meanwhile according to the article from qatar.angloinfo.com, Employees cannot switch companies during the first two years of their employment.
Banning order

"Changing jobs in Qatar is not straight forward because Work Permits are directly linked to sponsorship by an employer. Sponsor employers are entitled to a banning order, which prevents a departing employee from joining another company for two years. This also affects employees’ residency status, and they may have to leave the country.
No-objection letter

To switch jobs without the ban, a no-objection letter from the current employer is required. Whether or not this is issued is at the discretion of the employer. A fee of QR1,000 to transfer sponsorship to a new employer applies, and it is usually covered by the new employer."

HSBC Qatar: Beware of Phishing

admin 20:08 Add Comment
What is phishing?

Phishing involves fraudsters using methods such as sending e-mails that requests the recipient to update or to verify their personal and financial information, including date of birth, login information, account details, credit card numbers, PINs etc. Usually, these e-mails claim to come from a legitimate organisation such as a bank, or online retailer.

The e-mail will contain a link that takes you to a spoof website that looks identical (or very similar) to the organisation’s genuine site. The fraudster can then capture personal data like passwords as you type it in or download malware onto your computer.

How can you protect yourself against phishing?

Always make sure that you see your personalised image when you receive an e-mail from us; any message we send to you includes your anti-phishing image. Your personalised image is known only by us, so you can be sure that any message containing your image is legitimate. If you ever receive an e-mail without your image, do not open any attachments or click any links in the e-mail.

Reputable organisations do not send unsolicited e-mail messages asking their customers to update or verify their personal and security details.

If you are in doubt about the legitimacy of the e-mail, or if you think that you have been a victim of a phishing scam, you should contact the organisation in question immediately. You should, however, be careful to use the normal method you use to contact the organisation in question, rather than use any suggestions included in, or by responding to, the e-mail.
